L. D. Arts College

About…

The college was set up in 1937, over a decade before Independence, with a view to inculcate the spirit of Indian culture and academics in students at a time when receiving a British education was stressed upon. Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel along with Ganesh Mavlankar and Kasturbhai Lalbhai played a key role in setting up L D Arts as one of the first grant-in-aid colleges in the city. L. D. Arts manages one of the greenest campuses. Founded by Sheth Shri Kasturbhai Lalbhai and named after his father Lalbhai Dalpatbhai, the College has been rendering yeoman service for almost six decades.

L. D. Arts is managed by the Ahmedabad Education Society that boasts of 20 institutes of excellence in Ahmedabad. The College was started during the dark days of foreign rule to instil a spirit of nationalism and humanism among the youth and help them attain a combination of character and academic excellence. Even in the changed academic milieu of today, the institution continues to be guided by the traditions and goals of the founding fathers.

Till date, the college is considered the biggest in the city. It offers 10 major and four subsidiary subjects to undergraduates. It offers seven postgraduate subjects. Besides this, the college also houses the largest IGNOU centre in the city. “From the very start, the college has been a centre where education, culture, discipline and safety go together. This has been our motto. With a 70:30 ratio of female to male students, the college has been a first choice for girls,” says Dr Mahipatsinh Chavda, principal of L D Arts. What make the college stand out further are courses with professional orientation. Of the four subsidiary subjects offered by the college, two are in Advertisement & Health Management and Office Management. No other college in the city offers such subjects. L D Arts is also among the few Arts colleges in the city which hold campus interviews. But it’s not all work and no play. For the college lays stress on extracurricular activities and sports like kho-kho and wrestling. Infrastructure is also in place for basketball, volleyball, cricket, tennis and badminton. The college also has a good alumni base with an alumni association holding regular meets.
